Five Otago marine reserves in force but missing from MPI’s rules page.

Checked against: MPI’s South-East area fishing rules (reviewed 28 September 2026) against the Department of Conservation

Found: DOC says the Waitaki, Papanui, Ōrau, Ōkaihae and Hākinikini marine reserves (Te Au Roa o Te Rakihouia) were gazetted on 28 May 2026 and have been in force since 1 July 2026; MPI’s South-East page does not list them yet.

Riverton tides would not have loaded, and three beaches were on the wrong kind of station.

Checked against: Every LINZ tide file name used by a page, and each beach page’s station against the coast it describes

Found: The Riverton/Aparima file was requested with the wrong name, which LINZ refuses, so the page would have shown no tides. Ninety Mile Beach was set to Pukenui Wharf, inside Houhora Harbour on the east coast; Baylys Beach and Oreti Beach were set to stations up a river and inside an estuary.

Five places switched from an approximate tide port to a nearby port with full data.

Checked against: The LINZ New Zealand Nautical Almanac 2026–27 secondary ports table, which marks some ports “* Data Approximate”

Found: Piha, Maraetai, Karioitahi Beach, Māhia and Paihia were set to ports that LINZ marks as approximate, some with no heights; Karioitahi’s port, Waiuku, sits up an arm of the Manukau Harbour, not on the open coast.

Near-duplicate places merged before publishing.

Checked against: The draft list of 119 places against their coordinates and tide ports

Found: Mangawhai and Mangawhai Heads, Papamoa and Papamoa Beach, Takapuna and Takapuna Beach, Pouto and Pouto Point, Foxton and Foxton Beach, and New Plymouth and Port Taranaki were the same spot with the same tide port; Manukau City is inland of the harbour whose tides people search for.

Found: Oamaru had been assigned to Canterbury; it is in the Otago Region.

Area rules removed from the species texts.

Checked against: The species guide texts against the places each species appears on

Found: The blue cod, red cod and flounder texts carried rules that apply only in one area (the Marlborough Sounds blue cod closure, Lyttelton Harbour red cod, the Banks Peninsula set-net window), so they would have shown on pages where they do not apply.

An inference about a protected area taken out.

Checked against: The Mahurangi guide against DOC’s Kawau Bay High Protection Area pages

Found: The draft said the water off Martins Bay lies inside the High Protection Area, worked out from DOC’s boundary coordinates; no official page says so.

Kaikōura rock lobster: MPI’s page contradicts itself.

Checked against: MPI’s Kaikōura area fishing rules page

Found: The page gives a rock lobster closure from 1 July to 30 September 2026 and a daily limit of 6, while its restricted-areas table still says no taking of rock lobster.
