The Grand stage

Grand Lake O' the Cherokees winds 66 river-miles of the Neosho through the Ozark foothills: 46,000 acres of docks, gravel points and stained-to-clear water that hosted multiple Bassmaster Classics. It is a jig fisherman's lake: brown bait around the thousands of docks and brush piles produces year-round.

Beyond the bass

Grand may be an even better crappie lake than bass lake: brush piles and dock shooting fill boats spring and fall. White bass run the Neosho and Spring rivers in April; blue cats prowl the flats; and the paddlefish snagging season below Pensacola Dam is a uniquely Oklahoma spectacle each spring.

Paddlefish and the spring flood

Grand's springtime bonus is prehistoric: paddlefish snagging below Twin Bridges draws a March-April pilgrimage for fish past 60 lb (permit and tagging rules apply). The same rains that trigger it muddy the Neosho and push crappie shallow: locals rotate between snagging mornings and jig-dunking afternoons in the flooded willows. By May the lake settles into its dock-shooting summer rhythm.
