Identification and biology
The largemouth is the biggest of the black basses: the jaw hinge extends past the eye (the field mark that separates it from spotted bass), the lateral stripe runs broken and bold, and Florida-strain genetics push maximum sizes past 15 pounds in managed fisheries. It is an ambush predator built for cover: eyesight-driven, warm-water adapted and territorial enough to make bed fishing a science of its own.
Where they live, hour by hour
Think of largemouth life as commutes between cover and food. Dawn: shallow edges (grass lines, seawalls, laydowns) hunting shad and bluegill. Midday: the nearest depth break, dock shade or canopy: they rarely travel far. Evening: back up the same paths. Seasonally the commute stretches: winter compresses them onto steep structure, spring pulls them progressively shallow to spawn, summer splits dawn-shallow from midday-deep, and fall follows bait into the creeks.
The mistakes that cost fish
Three habits separate frustrated visitors from local sticks. Fishing memories instead of conditions: last month's grass line means nothing after a two-foot drawdown (check the level trend first). Casting to open water: largemouth are object-oriented; every cast should relate to cover, shade or an edge. And leaving fish to find fish: bass school by mood: one bite usually means several more in casting range, so slow down exactly where the first one ate.
Temperature range
Light bar = active range ยท solid = spawn window (where applicable). See the full temperature guide.
Tackle setups
| Situation | Setup | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Flipping cover | 7'3" heavy casting rod, 50 lb braid, 1/2-3/4 oz jig or Texas rig | Cover demands leverage: you are lifting fish out, not playing them |
| Moving baits | 7' medium-heavy casting, 15 lb fluoro, spinnerbait/chatterbait/squarebill | Covers water to locate mood and depth fast |
| Finesse / clear water | 7' medium spinning, 10 lb braid to 8 lb fluoro leader, wacky or ned rig | When pressure or post-fronts shrink the strike zone |
| Topwater dawn | 6'10" medium casting, 30 lb braid, walking bait or popper | Braid floats and drives hooks at distance |
Seasonal playbook
High summer (80F+)
Topwater at first light on points and seawalls, then slide out to 12-25 ft brush and points with a Carolina rig, deep crank or drop shot. The bite is dawn, dusk or deep.
Active season (65-80F)
Prime chasing season. Work moving baits on points and pockets: spinnerbaits, chatterbaits and squarebills, with a stick worm behind for followers.
Transition (50-65F)
Fish are grouping on channel swings and steeper structure. Slow down: jigs and finesse plastics dragged on 10-20 ft breaks produce the better fish.
Winter (under 50F)
Short feeding windows around midday warmth. Suspend baits, blade baits and a slow jig near deep timber or channel ledges.

Common questions
What is the best bait for largemouth bass?
There is no single answer, but three cover 80% of situations: a Texas-rigged soft plastic around any cover, a spinnerbait or chatterbait when wind puts chop on the bank, and a walking topwater at first light in warm water. Match size to forage and let the day's report pick depth.
How big do largemouth bass get?
Northern-strain fish top out near 10 lb; Florida-strain genetics (stocked across the South and California) reach the mid-teens. The world record: 22 lb 4 oz: has stood since 1932, shared since 2009 with a Japanese fish.
