Black, white and where they differ
White crappie tolerate stain and current (delta reservoirs grew the world record); blacks prefer clearer, stiller water with more vegetation. Both school hard around vertical cover: standing timber, brush piles, bridge pilings, stake beds: and both built the friendliest fishing culture in America around a light-wire jig and a longing for fried fillets.
The vertical year
Crappie life is a depth story. Winter: tight schools over deep brush and channel edges (15-30 ft): slow vertical jigging. Pre-spawn: staging on the first structure outside spawning bays. Spawn (58-64F): males shallow around anything woody: the season everyone remembers. Summer: back to deep cover and bridge shade, where electronics ('spider rigging' or forward-facing) rule. Fall: creek-channel regrouping: the sleeper trophy window.
The mistakes that cost fish
Fishing under the school: crappie feed upward: set baits at or above marks, never below. Hooksets that belong to bass fishing: 'paper mouth' is literal: lift, do not yank. And leaving biters to chase rumors: a producing brush pile often holds fish in waves: rest it ten minutes rather than running the lake.
Temperature range
Light bar = active range ยท solid = spawn window (where applicable). See the full temperature guide.
Tackle setups
| Situation | Setup | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Single-pole jigging | 10-12' jig pole, 6 lb hi-vis, 1/16-1/32 oz jig | Precision around timber: the classic craft |
| Casting light | 6'6" light spinning, 4-6 lb, jig under float | Spawn-season banks and dock shooting |
| Spider rig | Multiple 14-16' poles, minnow rigs | Slow-trolls open flats to locate schools |
| Ice/deep vertical | Light action, 4 lb, tungsten jig + minnow | Winter schools demand subtlety |
Seasonal playbook
High summer (80F+)
Straight down on bridge pilings and deep brush at 15-25 ft. Minnows outfish jigs in hot water; move until the graph shows them stacked.
Active season (65-80F)
Spawning shallow around cover in spring; jigs under a float near buck brush and laydowns.
Transition (50-65F)
Grouping on brush and channel ledges 10-20 ft; tight-line jigs or spider-rig minnows.
Winter (under 50F)
Deep, tight schools over brush; a slow vertical jig with light line.

Common questions
What depth do crappie hold at?
Wherever vertical cover intersects their seasonal band: typically 2-8 ft during the spawn, 12-25 ft in summer and winter. On covered waters our daily plans name the working depth.
Minnows or jigs?
Both, seasonally: jigs cover water and win in spring; live minnows convert neutral fish in summer heat and winter cold. The deadliest rig is often both: a minnow-tipped jig.
