The eye of the matter
The walleye's mirror-eye (tapetum lucidum) defines the fishery: superb low-light vision means dawn, dusk, night, wind-chop and stain are feeding conditions, while bright calm middays send them tight to bottom or deep. Add a soft-mouthed, subtle bite and a fillet worth planning dinner around, and you have the north's most pursued fish.
Structure, wind and the walleye chop
Walleye relate to edges: reef rims, weedline gaps, break contours, mud-flat rises. Wind rearranges everything: 'walleye chop' pushes plankton, bait and feeding fish onto whatever structure it strikes: fish the windblown side even when it is uncomfortable. Presentations track the calendar: jig-and-minnow spring, rigged leeches and crawlers summer, jigging raps and blades fall, and trolled cranks whenever fish scatter.
The mistakes that cost fish
Fishing over their heads: walleye hug bottom: if your bait is 5 ft up, it is invisible. Ignoring the light schedule: the evening bite is not folklore: plan the day's peak effort at dusk. And bulldozing the bite: when a jig 'feels heavy,' feed it a second before setting: half of walleye fishing is believing the subtle take.
Temperature range
Light bar = active range ยท solid = spawn window (where applicable). See the full temperature guide.
Tackle setups
| Situation | Setup | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Jig and minnow | 6'8" medium-light spinning, 6 lb fluoro, 1/8-3/8 oz | The universal cold-water opener |
| Bottom bouncer + harness | 7' medium casting, 12 lb, crawler harness | Covers summer flats at 0.8-1.3 mph |
| Jigging rap / blade | 6'6" medium, 8 lb | Fall aggression and ice-season verticality |
| Trolling cranks | Line-counter reels, leadcore or braid | Depth-precise basin coverage |
Seasonal playbook
High summer (80F+)
Deep weedlines and mud flats early and late; leeches or crawler harnesses on bottom bouncers, or trolled cranks over the thermocline.
Active season (65-80F)
Jig and minnow on rock reefs and points; the evening bite on wind-blown shores is the one to plan around.
Transition (50-65F)
Follow bait to steep breaks; jigging raps and blade baits, best window at dusk.
Winter (under 50F)
Slow vertical jigging over deep structure at midday; on ice country, first-ice walleye bite near dark.

Common questions
What is the best time of day for walleye?
The last two hours of light, followed by dawn: low-light vision advantage is the whole biology. Night trolling over flats produces the biggest summer fish on many waters.
Jig, rig or troll?
Match the spread of fish: jig when they concentrate on structure, live-bait rig when they hold scattered but tight, troll when marks spread over flats or basins. Our lake reports name which pattern is on.
