Finding the school, keeping the school

Perch move in packs along soft-bottom flats, weed edges and drop transitions: the game is search-then-anchor. Drift or hop until the first taps, then work the school methodically: they compete, so speed matters once located. Depth climbs seasonal: 8-15 ft spring, 20-35 ft summer basins, and classic winter mud between 18-30 ft where bloodworm larvae concentrate them.

The mistakes that cost fish

Staying after the school leaves: perch bites die abruptly: first lull, move 50 yards, not 5. Oversized offerings: #6 hooks, small minnows, spikes and plastics match the forage. And ignoring the little marks on sonar: 'clutter near bottom' is often the jackpot everyone idles past.
