Three species, three games
Channel cats (to ~15 lb) are the everywhere-fish: scent-driven, generous, perfect for baited holes. Blues (to 100-plus) are open-water predators of fresh shad: the trophy drift-fishing game. Flatheads (to 80-plus) are ambush carnivores of live bait and timber: the night specialist's fish. Most 'catfish lakes' rank by their blue-cat ceiling, but the channel bite pays the daily bills.
Reading catfish water
Current edges, channel bends, flat-to-channel transitions and windblown mud lines concentrate feeding cats. In reservoirs, the winter drift bite happens on big flats near the river channel where shad ball up; summer scatters fish shallow at night and deep by day. Fresh bait is non-negotiable for blues: a shad that died this morning out-fishes yesterday's tenfold.
The mistakes that cost fish
Stale bait is the cardinal sin. Anchoring forever is second: give a spot 30-45 minutes, then move: catfish are more mobile than their reputation. Third, over-complicating rigs: a sliding sinker, a leader and a circle hook covers nearly everything: let the rod load, reel tight, never jerk.
Temperature range
Light bar = active range ยท solid = spawn window (where applicable). See the full temperature guide.
Tackle setups
| Situation | Setup | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Drift/controlled drag | 7'6" medium-heavy conventional, 30 lb mono, 2-4 oz slinky weight | Covers winter flats for trophy blues |
| Anchored channels | 7' medium-heavy, 20 lb, sliding sinker + 5/0 circle | The baited-hole standard everywhere |
| Flathead night rig | 8' heavy, 65 lb braid, 8/0 circle, live bait | Timber and log jams demand winching power |
| Juglines (where legal) | Rigged jugs over flats | A southern tradition that fills coolers |
Seasonal playbook
High summer (80F+)
Anchor on 20-30 ft baited holes with punch bait or cut shad. They keep biting through the heat when everything else quits.
Active season (65-80F)
Drift cut bait across flats near the river channel, or anchor on ledges at dusk.
Transition (50-65F)
Follow shad into creeks; cut bait on the bottom near channel swings.
Winter (under 50F)
Deep river-channel holes; fresh cut bait fished patiently at midday.

Common questions
What is the best catfish bait?
Fresh cut gizzard shad for blues, punch/stink baits or cut bait for channels, lively bluegill or bullheads (where legal) for flatheads. Freshness beats secret recipes every time.
When do big blue catfish bite best?
Winter, counterintuitively: December-February drift fishing over baitfish flats produces the year's giants on most southern reservoirs. Stable weather between fronts is the window our reports flag.
