Grand Lake o’ the Cherokees floods 46,500 acres of the Neosho River valley in northeastern Oklahoma, one of the state’s largest and most heavily fished lakes. Its fishery is broad: largemouth and spotted bass along the endless docks and rock, striped bass hybrids schooling the open water, crappie in the brush, catfish through the channels, and a paddlefish snagging season that draws crowds each spring.

Bass and the docks

The shoreline is lined with boat docks, and bass use them year-round: skipping jigs and wacky rigs under the docks is the bread-and-butter pattern. Spotted bass work the rocky points and bluff ends, largemouth the flatter coves and the flooded brush in the upper arms. Spring pushes fish shallow into the Elk River and Honey Creek arms, which warm first.

Hybrids, crappie and paddlefish

Hybrid stripers school over the main lake chasing shad: watch for birds and surface activity from summer through fall, and throw slabs or swimbaits. Crappie stack the brush piles and bridge structure, best in spring and fall. The paddlefish season each spring on the upper arms is a genuine spectacle: snagging for prehistoric fish that reach sixty pounds, managed with a permit system.
