Oklahoma fishing license required. ODWC special regulation for Grand Lake: crappie 15 combined per day, 10-inch minimum. Paddlefish: free permit, one per day and two per year, barbless single or treble hook, tag and report harvest through E-Check within 24 hours; snagging is closed 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. east of I-35 and north of I-40 except Miami City Park. Grand Lake O' the Cherokees formed in 1940 when Pensacola Dam was finished between Disney and Langley. It impounds the Neosho, Spring and Elk rivers and lies in Delaware, Ottawa, Mayes and Craig counties. The Grand River Dam Authority operates it. ODWC's 2024 survey report gives 45,056 acres, 1,300 miles of shoreline, a mean depth of 36 feet and a maximum of 133 feet; ODWC's lake page lists a smaller 41,749 acres.

Bass, docks and new habitat

ODWC calls the black bass fishery, largemouth and spotted bass, renowned. The shoreline is rock and gravel with riprap, brush piles and boat docks, but vegetation and standing timber are scarce, so ODWC placed PVC and Mossback structures in 2022 and 2023. It has also been stocking: F1 Florida largemouth fingerlings (93,000 a year in 2022 and 2023) in the Duck, Horse and Honey Creek areas, the start of a 10-year project.

Crappie abundance was high in ODWC's fall 2022 trap netting, and the lake carries a special crappie limit. ODWC stocked 125,910 hybrid striped bass in summer 2022 and 700,000 hybrid fry at Twin Bridges in May 2023, though hybrids, white bass and catfish sampled at low abundance in 2023. Blue, channel and flathead catfish round out the list.

Paddlefish

ODWC says the Grand/Neosho system offers some of the best paddlefishing in the world, with Grand among the prime lakes. Fish are snagged during the early spring spawning run with a stout rod, heavy line and a barbless hook. A free paddlefish permit is required in addition to a fishing license.
