Iowa prints the word "continuous" next to almost every species it manages, and then carves out three lakes in the north-west corner where the rules are completely different.
Every season we have verified in Iowa
One block per rule, because a single species can be on two calendars in the same state depending on the water. The band under each heading is the legal season; the row under it is what our own data says the fish are doing.
Walleye — Inland waters and boundary rivers
Continuous season across the state — except on West Okoboji, East Okoboji and Spirit Lake, where walleye runs from the first Saturday in May to February 14 with a reduced limit of three. The Iowa Great Lakes are the state’s premier walleye fishery and they are managed as their own world.

Walleye — The Iowa Great Lakes: Spirit, East and West Okoboji
May 2, 2026 to February 14, 2027 — the first Saturday in May, the same rule Wisconsin uses. Muskellunge on the same lakes is closed from May 21 to November 30, which is the inverse of what you would expect and exists to protect the fish through the warmest months.

Bass — Statewide
Continuous season, but three different minimum lengths depending on what kind of water you are in. A three-fish limit is tight for the Midwest and it is deliberate: Iowa manages for size rather than numbers.

What the water is doing while the season is open
This is the part an agency page will not tell you. The temperature row above is the seasonal curve we use for the 10 of 14 Iowa waters we track on a prairie walleye profile, and it is why an opening date and a fishable date are not the same thing. A season that opens while the water is still in the forties is a legal invitation, not a biological one: the fish are there, they are just not eating on your schedule yet. Cross the legal band against the activity row before you book the day off.
