New Jersey Fishing Seasons

Every season we have verified for New Jersey, read off NJ Fish and Wildlife on 2026-09-14, with the dates calculated for 2026 where the regulation writes them as a rule.

New Jersey is two fisheries with one licence conversation: a stocked-trout spring inland, and a marine calendar of split windows where the same fish has three or four separate seasons in a year with a different bag limit in each.

Every season we have verified in New Jersey

One block per rule, because a single species can be on two calendars in the same state depending on the water. The band under each heading is the legal season; the row under it is what our own data says the fish are doing.

Opening day 2026 was 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 11, with more than 180,000 rainbow trout and 20,000 brown trout stocked for it. The division sets opening day in April each year and publishes it in the Freshwater Fishing Digest, so it is worth checking rather than assuming the same Saturday.

The regulation reads that no licence holder may set a crab pot "except between April 6 to December 4 in Delaware Bay and between March 15 and November 30 in all other waters". Pots may be tended around the clock outside Delaware Bay, but only from 4 a.m. to 9 p.m. inside it, and every pot must be checked and emptied at least once every 72 hours. Pots and trot lines need their own licence — single hand lines and collapsible traps do not.

Limit
One bushel a day. Egg-bearing females must be released immediately.

What the water is doing while the season is open

This is the part an agency page will not tell you. The temperature row above is the seasonal curve we use for the 3 of 14 New Jersey waters we track on a northern lake profile, and it is why an opening date and a fishable date are not the same thing. A season that opens while the water is still in the forties is a legal invitation, not a biological one: the fish are there, they are just not eating on your schedule yet. Cross the legal band against the activity row before you book the day off.

Where to fish it

We publish a daily report for 14 New Jersey waters, each with live flow or tide and today's conditions.

The licence is a separate question

An open season is not permission to fish. Check the state agency for the licence you need before you go.

Questions

When does fishing season open in New Jersey?

It depends on the species: trout april 11 to december 31; bass january 1–april 14, june 16–december 31; crab march 15 to november 30. Every date on this page was read off NJ Fish and Wildlife on 2026-09-14.

Do I need a licence to fish in New Jersey?

Yes. A New Jersey fishing licence is required, and it is separate from the season: an open season is not permission to fish without one.

Are these New Jersey dates going to change?

Some of them, and the page says which. Dates written as a rule in the regulations are calculated here for 2026, so they follow the rule rather than going stale. Dates the agency sets each year are shown as exactly that, with no calendar band, because inventing one would be worse than leaving it empty.
