A river lake with current

Logan Martin impounds the Coosa River across 15,000 acres between Pell City and Talladega, and the current running through it defines the fishing. Alabama spotted bass: Coosa-strain fish famous for fighting far above their size: dominate the rock and current seams, with largemouth on the docks and grass, striped bass and hybrids in the deeper channel, crappie in the brush and catfish everywhere. The lake hosts tournaments constantly and still gives up limits.

Spots on the current

When Alabama Power generates, the bite turns on: spotted bass stack on current-swept points, riprap and bridge pilings. Work them with shaky heads, jerkbaits and small crankbaits, keeping the bait in contact with the moving water. Largemouth prefer the thousands of boat docks and the remaining grass beds: skipping jigs and wacky rigs under docks is a year-round pattern. Winter finds spots deep on the channel ledges.

Linesides and crappie

Stripers and hybrids run the river channel and stack below Neely Henry Dam and around the Logan Martin dam area, hitting live shad and big swimbaits, best in cooler months. Crappie fill the planted brush and bridge structure: 10-20 feet, jigs and minnows, with strong spring and fall bites. Catfish, including big blues, work the channel drops on cut bait.

Public ramps at Lakeside Park, Riverside, Stemley Bridge and Alabama Power access areas serve the lake, with marinas throughout.
