The idea in one paragraph
Solunar theory (John Alden Knight, 1926) proposes that fish activity peaks when the moon is directly overhead or underfoot (the two daily 'majors', about 2 hours each) and at moonrise and moonset (the 'minors', about an hour). The gravitational logic is the same as tides: and in salt water, where moon literally moves the water, the correlation is strong and uncontroversial.

What the evidence actually says
In fresh water, studies are mixed but lean interesting: feeding activity and catch records often bump around majors, especially near new and full moons, and especially at dawn or dusk overlaps. The honest summary: solunar periods are a real but secondary signal: weather, season and light dominate. Using windows like a professional
Treat majors as effort allocators, not guarantees: if you have four hours to fish, put them on the windows; if you are fishing all day, plan your best water for those hours and scout during the lulls. Our daily reports compute each water's exact windows and mark when they overlap dawn, dusk or moving tides: the overlaps are where the theory earns its keep.
Majors, minors and how we calculate yours
Each water page on this site computes the moon's transit for that exact longitude and date: the two majors bracket the moment the moon crosses overhead and underfoot (about two hours each), minors bracket moonrise and moonset (about one hour). Because they derive from the moon's orbit, windows shift roughly 50 minutes later each day: the same drift you see in tide tables. Our reports print them ready-made, so the theory costs you nothing to test.
Stacking odds: when windows overlap
The theory earns most respect where signals stack. A major that lands on dawn combines three drivers: light change, feeding rhythm and lunar pull. On tidal water, a major over a moving tide is the day's honest peak: our coastal pages flag both. And around new and full moons, the windows carry extra weight: plan the trip's centerpiece hours there and use the lulls for moving, scouting and sandwiches.
A century of the theory, briefly
John Alden Knight published the Solunar Tables in 1936 after studying guides' logs in Florida: he claimed moon position explained feeding better than any variable but weather. The tables became an institution (newspapers still print them), the science stayed contested, and the practice quietly won: almost every serious charter culture: Texas trout guides, muskie trollers, Erie captains: schedules around majors without calling them that. Tradition is data with a long memory.
When to ignore the windows
Solunar windows lose to three things, in order: weather events (a front beats the moon every time: fish the front), moving tides on coastal water when they disagree (tide wins: it moves the food), and hatch or bait events on trout rivers (a 2 PM drake emergence outranks any table). Use the windows as the tiebreaker and the default plan: never as a reason to sit out visibly feeding fish or to fish through visibly dead water on schedule.
Common questions
Is fishing better on a full moon?
Best around it rather than on it: the days flanking new and full moons carry the strongest solunar pull. Full-moon nights can shift feeding into darkness: which explains slow next-mornings more than any curse.
