What every number means, which ones matter for your trip, and how to turn a report into a plan.

Start with the verdict, then ask why

A good fishing report leads with an honest activity score. Ours run 1-5: the number matters less than its reason. A 3/5 from summer heat means fish early and you will do fine; a 3/5 from a passing cold front means the afternoon may die entirely. Always read the one-line reason behind the score: it tells you which hours the day actually contains.

The four numbers that decide your day

Water level or flow tells you where fish can be: falling reservoir levels pull fish to structure, rising rivers push them to the banks. Pressure trend tells you their mood: steady or slowly falling is good, a sharp post-front rise is tough. Wind sets your water: 10-15 mph onto a bank stacks bait and predators there. And the solunar windows mark when short feeding bursts are most likely: plan effort peaks around them rather than fishing eight flat hours.

Recency is everything

A fishing report from last weekend describes a different lake. Water temperature swings, one front, or a generation schedule change rewrites the pattern in 48 hours: which is why every water on this site regenerates its report each morning and keeps only a 7-day archive. If a report is not dated today, treat it as history, not advice.

From report to game plan, in three steps

One: match the day's best windows (solunar plus dawn/dusk) to your available hours: fish fewer, better hours. Two: pick the pattern the report ranks best (species and depth) as plan A, and the second species as the fallback when plan A stalls. Three: check the level or flow trend against your access: dropping tailwaters mean wading windows, rising lakes mean flooded-cover flipping. The report is not the fishing: it is the shortcut past the first two hours of guessing.

What separates a good report from noise

Judge any fishing report by four tests. Is it dated today? Does every number name its source (a gauge ID, a weather model, a tide station)? Does it commit to a verdict instead of hedging everything? And does it change when conditions change: or read suspiciously similar every day? Reports that pass all four: including, we hope, ours: save you the first two hours of every trip. Reports that fail them are content, not intelligence.

Worked example: reading a summer report

Take a real August morning on a Texas reservoir: score 3/5, 'fish early or late', lake 0.7 ft below pool and easing, SSW 6 mph, pressure steady, majors at 5:40 AM and 6:05 PM. The reading: stable summer pattern, no front to change behavior, so light rules the day. The falling level pushes bait to main-lake structure: start on points, not pockets. The morning major overlaps dawn: be fishing at 5:30, not launching. By 10 AM, move deep or move on: the report told you the whole day before sunrise.

Reports and the honesty problem

The fishing-report economy has an incentive flaw: marinas sell trips, media sells optimism, and 'epic bite!' outperforms 'slow, work for them' every day on social. Our scores exist to resist that: they are computed before any human could be tempted to round up, and an honest 2/5 protects your Saturday better than a flattering 4. When you find any source that publishes bad news about its own water, keep it: that is the rarest signal in fishing media.
