First lake up the Salt

Saguaro sits lowest on the Salt River chain: closest to Phoenix, prettiest at golden hour (the canyon walls and saguaro benches earn the name), and busiest by far. Under the recreation surface runs a real fishery: largemouth on the walls and reed edges, yellow bass in uncountable schools, and stocked rainbows all winter in the cool river inflow.

Bass between the boats

The program works around traffic: dawn topwater along the tules before the wake fleet launches, then vertical: drop shots and jigs on the canyon walls' steps at 20-40 ft where bass escape the chop. Winter flips the advantage: cool water, empty lake, and jerkbait fish on the sunny walls: locals call November-February the real season.

The lake teems with yellow bass (barfish): schools that fill livewells on spoons and worms whenever birds show: the desert's most democratic fishery and the forage engine for everything bigger. Kids' first fish and fish-taco fillets by the dozen: no one leaves fishless who finds a school.
