The Brunswick at Durrumbul
Durrumbul is the hinterland locality on the Brunswick River upstream of Mullumbimby, where the river runs fresh through subtropical farmland and rainforest remnants before it becomes tidal and runs out to the sea at Brunswick Heads. Species and seasons
Australian bass are the fish of the fresh Brunswick, taken on surface lures and small hardbodies under the overhanging trees from spring to autumn; the tidal river below Mullumbimby holds bream, flathead and estuary perch. The New South Wales river closure for bass and estuary perch, 1 May to 31 August, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The crossings and reserves around Durrumbul and Mullumbimby give access to the river, and a kayak covers the reaches down toward the tidal water.
Planning a visit
Mullumbimby, just downstream, has supplies and cafes, and Byron Bay is close. Bring light bass gear and a kayak.
The river through the year
The Brunswick drains the wettest hills of the Northern Rivers, the ranges above Mullumbimby, and it rises quickly and floods after heavy rain before settling back into a small, clear river of pools and runs. The bass live in the fresh water above Mullumbimby and move down to the estuary to spawn in winter, the reason for the New South Wales closure from 1 May to 31 August; they return in spring and feed through the warm months, best on surface lures along the shaded banks at dusk.
