The Reynolds at Old Blyth Homestead
The Reynolds River runs through the southern part of Litchfield National Park and out across the floodplains toward the Finniss and the coast south-west of Darwin, a river of billabongs, paperbark swamps and sandstone country; Old Blyth Homestead is a historic site on its course inside the park. The Bureau of Meteorology’s Reynolds River gauges have not reported recent readings to Water Data Online, so this page carries no level chart. Darwin has its own page.
Species and seasons
Barramundi are the fish of the Reynolds, in the billabongs and the channels as the floodplain drains after the wet, taken on lures and flies; saratoga live in the billabongs. The Northern Territory has no general closed season for barramundi, and the NT Government’s possession limits apply; Litchfield National Park’s own rules on fishing and access apply inside the park.
Where to fish it
The four-wheel-drive tracks of southern Litchfield reach the Reynolds and its billabongs in the dry season; the river is remote and the tracks close in the wet. Estuarine crocodiles live in the Reynolds and its billabongs: keep well back from the water.
