The reach
The Burdekin at Sellheim is the river east of Charters Towers where the Flinders Highway crosses it, a wide, sandy, dry-country river between rock bars and river gums below the Burdekin Falls Dam, with the Sellheim bridge, the Macrossan park and the reaches of pools and sand upstream toward the dam and downstream toward the Bowen junction. It is barramundi and grunter water of the inland kind, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Sellheim supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Barramundi fish the rock bars, the deep pools and the snags in the warm months, with the Queensland east coast closure from 1 November to 31 January computed on the species card; sooty grunter are on every rock bar; sleepy cod, spangled perch and catfish are present; and red claw are a pot fishery. The dam upstream, exempt from the closure, has its own page. Crocodiles are in the river.
Where to fish it
The Macrossan park and the bridge give bank access to the pools, and a boat or a kayak launched at the crossing covers the pools upstream and downstream; the rock bars and the deep pools are the barramundi and grunter water, and the sand flats between are dry-season camps. The river runs to pools in the dry and floods in the wet.
