The reach
The Burdekin at Clare is the lower river in the cane country south of Townsville, held into a pool by the Clare weir where the irrigation channels leave it, running through the delta toward Ayr, Home Hill and the sea, wide and sandy between river gums and cane. It is barramundi water of the lower river, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at the Clare weir supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Barramundi fish the weir pool, the snags and the deep bends in the warm months, with the Queensland east coast closure from 1 November to 31 January computed on the species card; sooty grunter and sleepy cod are present; king threadfin and the estuary fish reach the tidal river below the delta weirs; and red claw are a pot fishery. Crocodiles are in the river.
Where to fish it
The Clare weir surrounds give bank access, the water below the weir is the barramundi hole, and a boat launched at the crossings covers the pool upstream and the delta reaches downstream toward the Burdekin bridge at Ayr; the snags and the deep bends are the water. Night fishing along the snags is the summer method.
