Fishing Lake Monduran: the full guide
The lake
Lake Monduran is the storage of the Fred Haigh Dam on the Kolan River, north-west of Bundaberg, and it is one of the stocked barramundi impoundments that made Queensland’s dam fishery famous: a big, timbered lake of bays and arms where barramundi that cannot breed are stocked by the local group and grow to sizes that the rivers rarely produce. There is a holiday park and a ramp at the dam wall, houseboats and hire boats, and a fishery that runs on the water temperature and the wind more than on anything else. The level reading on this page comes from Water Data Online where a current series is published; if none is shown, the Bureau’s service had no live series for the storage on the day we checked.
Species and seasons
Barramundi are the fish, from spring through autumn when the water is warm, on the points, the timber and the weed edges at dawn, dusk and at night, with a summer that can be too hot at midday and a winter that shuts them down; the impoundment fish are exempt from the east coast closed season because they are in a stocked dam, and the Queensland Government publishes that exemption and the size and bag rules. Bass, golden perch and saratoga are also stocked in Queensland dams and the local stocking group lists what goes into this one; redclaw crayfish are a pot fishery.
