The Kolan at Springfield
Springfield is a gauging site on the Kolan River below Fred Haigh Dam, Lake Monduran, in the cane country north of Bundaberg, where the river winds toward the Kolan Barrage and the sea. The Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Springfield supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page. Lake Monduran has its own page.
Species and seasons
Barramundi are the fish of the Kolan below Monduran, many of them fish that came over the dam’s spillway in the wet, taken on hardbodies and soft plastics along the snags and the weed. The river is not one of the exempt impoundments, so the east coast barramundi closed season, 1 November to 31 January, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The road crossings between Gin Gin and the coast give access to the Kolan; much of the frontage is cane farms. Estuarine crocodiles are rare this far south but not unknown; take care.
Planning a visit
Gin Gin and Bundaberg have supplies, and Lake Monduran has a holiday park. Bring barramundi gear, and time trips for the months outside the closure.
The river through the year
Below Lake Monduran, the Kolan River runs east through the cane country toward the Kolan Barrage, where it becomes tidal, and the sea north of Bundaberg. Its flow at Springfield depends largely on releases from Fred Haigh Dam and on the summer rain, and the chart shows both. Barramundi move through the river between the barrage and the dam. The Queensland east coast closed season for barramundi, 1 November to 31 January, applies to the river below the dam; the dam itself is exempt. The dry-season months are when the river is lowest and clearest.
