The Mulgrave at Peets Bridge
Peets Bridge crosses the Mulgrave River near Gordonvale, south of Cairns, where the river comes out of the rainforest of the Bellenden Ker range onto the cane flats on its way to join the Russell at the coast. Species and seasons
Jungle perch and sooty grunter are the fish of the Mulgrave’s clear, fast fresh water, on small lures and flies in the runs and pools; barramundi move up from the tidal water below. The east coast barramundi closed season, 1 November to 31 January, applies to the river, tidal and fresh; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The crossings and the reserves near Gordonvale give bank access to the Mulgrave, and the rocky runs upstream toward the ranges are waded in the dry season. Estuarine crocodiles live in the lower river: keep back from the water there. The rocky runs and the pools upstream of Peets Bridge are the jungle perch water, fished with small spinners and flies cast into the white water, and the slower pools hold sooty grunter.

Gordonvale is on the Bruce Highway a short drive south of Cairns, with supplies close by, and the river crossings are minutes from the town. Bring small lures and flies for jungle perch and sooty grunter, a wading plan for the dry season and caution in the lower river, where crocodiles live.
