The reach
The Barron at Kuranda is the river in the rainforest village above Cairns, slow and deep through the Kuranda reach above the Barron Falls, with the village, the railway station on the bank, the river cruises and the walking tracks of the national park, and the gorge and the falls below dropping to the coast. It is grunter and jungle perch water in the rainforest, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Kuranda supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Sooty grunter are the fish, on the rock and the snags in the warm months on lures and bait; jungle perch are in the clear reaches and the creeks under their rules; barramundi reach the pools above the falls, with the Queensland east coast closure from 1 November to 31 January computed on the species card; sleepy cod and catfish are present; and the river below the falls is a gorge. Crocodiles are recorded in the reach.
Where to fish it
The village foreshore and the walking tracks give bank access to the Kuranda reach, a kayak covers the slow water above the falls, and the crossings upstream toward Mareeba give the rock-bar reaches; the rock and the snags are the grunter water. The falls and the gorge below are for looking at.
