A millpond turned state park

Killens Pond covers about 66 acres on the Murderkill River near Felton in Kent County, Delaware, an old millpond that is now the centerpiece of Killens Pond State Park. It is a shallow, wood-rich warm-water fishery holding largemouth bass, black crappie, bluegill, chain pickerel and channel catfish, with good shoreline and small-boat access.

Largemouth relate to the standing timber, stumps, lily pads and the old creek channel, taken on plastics worked slowly through cover, spinnerbaits along the edges and topwater in the low-light hours of summer. The pond is shallow enough that fish stay accessible all season, and the upper end near the river inlet holds fish when the main pond quiets.

Crappie, pickerel and panfish

Black crappie hold the timber and brush and are best in spring around spawning, taken on small jigs and minnows. Chain pickerel ambush from the pads and take spinners and spoons with real aggression. Bluegill and catfish give families steady action from the bank, which is much of what this pond is for.

Kent County logistics

Killens Pond State Park provides a boat ramp for small craft, rentals, a nature center, camping and a water park, with trails circling the pond for bank access. Electric motors only. Dover is 15 minutes north and Felton is at the doorstep. It is a genuinely good introduction to fishing for children.
