An old millpond

Noxontown Pond covers about 158 acres on Noxontown Mill Pond near Middletown in New Castle County, Delaware, an eighteenth-century millpond on the Appoquinimink drainage bordered partly by St. Andrew’s School. It is a shallow, weedy, wood-rich water holding largemouth bass, chain pickerel, crappie, bluegill and catfish.

The pond is thick with lily pads, submerged timber and shoreline wood, and the largemouth live in it: frogs and weedless plastics over the pads, jigs and Texas rigs in the wood, and spinnerbaits along the edges. Summer heat pushes fish deeper into the cover and into the shaded upper end.

Pickerel and panfish

Chain pickerel are numerous and aggressive around the vegetation, hitting spinners, spoons and topwater with a violence out of proportion to their size. Crappie hold the wood in spring, and bluegill are everywhere. It is a rewarding pond for anglers who enjoy picking apart heavy cover.

New Castle County logistics

A public boat ramp serves the pond with electric-motor-only rules and shoreline access at the launch area, with parking for a modest number of vehicles. Middletown provides services minutes away, and Wilmington is about 40 minutes north. Vegetation grows heavy by midsummer and a kayak or canoe is often the best way to work it, since a paddle craft slips into the pockets between the pads that a larger boat cannot reach. Spring, before the growth thickens, is the easiest time to cover water.
