Deep and restricted

Liberty Reservoir covers 3,100 acres on the North Branch Patapsco River northwest of Baltimore, another city water-supply lake managed with strict rules: watershed permit required, electric motors only, no swimming. It runs deeper and clearer than Loch Raven, and the fishery reflects it: smallmouth and largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, perch and a stocked trout component in the cold months.

Bass on structure

The clear, deep water favors structure fishing: rocky points, submerged roadbeds, standing timber and channel edges hold both bass species. Smallmouth work the rock while largemouth prefer the wood and coves. Finesse presentations and low-light periods matter here more than on stained reservoirs. Spring and fall are the strongest windows.

Walleye and trout

Walleye hold the deeper structure and are targeted at dusk and after dark with jigs and slow-trolled baits. Maryland stocks trout in the cool months, adding a shoreline fishery for bait and spinner anglers. Crappie and perch fill out the card, holding the timber and deeper brush through the seasons.
