A UP river

The Escanaba River flows about 50 miles through Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to Little Bay de Noc at Escanaba, draining iron-country forest and swamp. The upper river and its branches hold wild brook trout and browns in cold, tannic water, while the lower river adds smallmouth bass, walleye and, near the mouth, fish moving in from the bay.

Trout in the branches

The middle and east branches and the upper main stem hold wild brook trout and browns in classic UP water: dark, cedar-lined, with deep holes and undercut banks. Fish small streamers, nymphs and attractor dries, moving often and approaching carefully. Access is through state and commercial forest land, with a genuine wilderness feel.

Smallmouth and the mouth

The lower river warms into smallmouth water, with walleye holding the deeper stretches and below the dams. Near the mouth at Escanaba, the river meets Little Bay de Noc, adding access to that bay’s excellent walleye and smallmouth fishing. The two together make a strong base for a UP trip.

Delta County logistics

Access is via road crossings, state forest land and the Escanaba area at the mouth. This is remote country with limited services outside the towns: bring supplies. Blackflies and mosquitoes are serious in early summer. Escanaba and Gladstone provide lodging and tackle, with the bay minutes away.
