Where the giants grow

Grenada is the crappie world's Everest: the lake that produces more 3-pound-plus white crappie than anywhere on earth. The formula: Yalobusha floodplain fertility, massive winter drawdowns, and explosive shad crops: fish reach trophy size in three fast years. Spring brings trailers from twenty states: the lake's name is the tournament headline.

Trophy season protocols

March-April is the pilgrimage: spawners flood the buckbrush flats at 2-6 ft, and single-pole dipping with 12-ft rods (a jig eased into every hole in the bush) rules the stained shallows. Long-line trollers cover the staging flats just outside. The fish average what other lakes call trophies: 2-lb fish barely raise eyebrows here.

The rest of the year
