Today's Fishing Report

Generated this morning from live readings: gauge, weather model, sun and moon. A fresh report is published here every morning.

Lake Gaston locks in another hot, bright day: the fish know the drill and so should you. Today brings clear skies, wind W around 5 mph, rising pressure near 1012 hPa and a high of 101. Water sits around 84 F for the season (estimated). With the last quarter, the solunar majors run 5:39 AM-7:39 AM and 5:39 PM-7:39 PM: plan around them and beat the heat.

The plan, species by species

Striped bassFair

Deep and early: live bait on downlines over the river channel at first light, or downriggers along thermocline depth.

Catfish (blue, channel)Fair

Anchor on 20-30 ft baited holes with punch bait or cut shad. They keep biting through the heat when everything else quits.

Largemouth bassSlow

Topwater at first light on points and seawalls, then slide out to 12-25 ft brush and points with a Carolina rig, deep crank or drop shot. The bite is dawn, dusk or deep.

CrappieSlow

Straight down on bridge pilings and deep brush at 15-25 ft. Minnows outfish jigs in hot water; move until the graph shows them stacked.

Tomorrow: Similar at 98 F with a rain chance. The solunar majors shift about 50 minutes later.Next report: Sat, Sep 5, 6:30 AMHow this report is made →

Largemouth bass illustration

Largemouth bass

Best: spring and fall

The headline act on most American reservoirs. Relates to cover: docks, brush, grass edges and points. Topwater at first light on points and seawalls, then slide out to 12-25 ft brush and points with a Carolina rig, deep crank or drop shot. The bite is dawn, dusk or deep.

Striped bass illustration

Striped bass

Best: spring and fall

The reservoir heavyweight. Follows shad and herring schools in open water year-round. Deep and early: live bait on downlines over the river channel at first light, or downriggers along thermocline depth.

Catfish (blue, channel) illustration

Catfish (blue, channel)

Good year-round

The most reliable bite on most southern waters. Blues run big; channels fill the cooler. Anchor on 20-30 ft baited holes with punch bait or cut shad. They keep biting through the heat when everything else quits.

Crappie illustration

Crappie

Best: Nov-Mar

Brush piles, bridge pilings and standing timber. The fish fry favorite. Straight down on bridge pilings and deep brush at 15-25 ft. Minnows outfish jigs in hot water; move until the graph shows them stacked.

Regulations

NC or VA license (reciprocal on the lake). Striper rules by season: check both states' current.

Summit Landing, Salmon Landing, Pea Hill, Poplar Creek ramps: NC and VA sides.

About this water

Fishing Lake Gaston: the full guide

Between the dams

Gaston pools the Roanoke between Kerr's tailrace and Roanoke Rapids: 34 miles of steady-level water lined with docks and: unusually for the region: real grass: hydrilla and eelgrass beds that changed the fishery. Bass fatten in the vegetation, stripers ride the generation current, and the lake fishes distinctly from its famous upstream neighbor.

The grass game

Gaston's hydrilla (managed but present) built a Piedmont rarity: frog fishing over matted grass, swim jigs down the edges, and punch rigs when summer seals the canopy. The grass line at 8-14 ft is the summer highway: bass, bream and every predator work it. Treatment years shift coverage: find this season's green before committing history's waypoints.

Current-driven stripers

Kerr Dam's releases push current lake-wide: stripers (and the lake's quality white perch) position on points and humps when turbines spin. Live bait pulled across the upper-lake bars, bucktails in the tailrace's boils: generation windows out-fish moon charts. Winter gulls over bait mark the schools the calm-day trollers miss.

Dock-country practicalities

The 350 miles of shoreline run nearly continuous docks: skipping and shooting them is the year-round bass baseline. Public ramps (Summit, Salmon Landing, Pea Hill) spread access; NC-VA reciprocal licensing covers the water: one lake, two states, no friction. Summer wake traffic peaks: the grass bite at dawn beats it honestly.

Common questions

Which license covers Lake Gaston?

Either North Carolina's or Virginia's on the water: reciprocity covers the lake proper. Shore fishing follows the state you stand in.

Does Gaston still have grass?

Managed but present: hydrilla and eelgrass beds persist by treatment cycle. The green edges concentrate summer bass: scout current coverage each season.
