A lake that does not freeze

Nelson Lake sits in Oliver County near Center, North Dakota, built as the cooling reservoir for the Milton R. Young power station on the lignite fields west of Bismarck. Warm water discharged from the plant keeps much of the lake open through the winter, making it the rare North Dakota water where anglers cast from an open shoreline in January.

Largemouth bass in a cold state

The warm water supports largemouth bass that grow faster and larger than anywhere else in North Dakota, and the lake is the state’s best-known bass fishery for that reason. Plastics, jigs, spinnerbaits and topwater worked along the rock, the shoreline structure and the vegetation all produce, with the warmest reaches near the discharge holding fish through the cold months.

Panfish and other species

Bluegill and crappie fill the shallower structure and provide steady action, and catfish are present in the deeper water. Because the thermal regime is artificial, seasonal patterns do not follow the rest of the state: fish stay active in months when nearby prairie lakes are locked under a foot of ice.

A public boat ramp and shoreline access serve the lake, about 45 minutes northwest of Bismarck via Highway 25 and Center. Ice conditions are unreliable and dangerous by design here, since the discharge keeps water open and thins ice unpredictably: treat any ice on this lake with extreme caution or stay off it entirely.
