End of the chain

Wateree closes the Catawba-Wateree chain northeast of Columbia: older, moodier and more southern than its upstream siblings: cypress edges, stained creeks, and a fishing culture measured in slab crappie and Saturday fish fries. It is the chain's most traditional water: and its most underrated.

Crappie tradition

The lake's crappie fleet works planted brush and blowdowns year-round: spring waves into the buckbrush of Wateree and Colonels creeks, summer schools on the channel-edge piles at 12-18 ft, winter stacks in the deep bends. Long-pole dipping persists here like the lowcountry: electronics joined the culture without replacing it.

Cats, stripers and the river pulse

Blue cats run the channel heavyweights (anchored cut gizzard in the bends: 40-plus-pounders yearly), and the striped bass story: once the chain's pride: persists in a managed remnant: confirm current SCDNR rules before targeting. Working Wateree
