The long lake

Oahe runs from Pierre to Bismarck: a Missouri River reservoir where walleye schools roam scattered structure (electronics and trolling spread the search), smallmouth thrive on riprap, and chinook salmon patrol the deep, cold water by the dam. Wind and scale are the challenges; solitude and limits are the payoff.

Wind-bound gold

Oahe's walleye ride the wind: sustained blows pile bait and fish on windward structure, and the next calm day those points are paved. Summer schools hold 25-35 ft on the old river channel: bottom bouncers, slow-death hooks, patience with the graph. When the smelt are up, so is everything.

Northern pike bonus rounds

Spring floods the shallow prairie bays with pike past 15 lb: dead smelt under bobbers or big spoons in 3-8 ft. The fishery peaks with high-water years: when Oahe rises into the grass, the pike answer within weeks.

Smelt, salmon, and the deep game

Oahe's cold depths run a second fishery under the walleye headline: Chinook salmon stocked since the 1980s patrol the old river channel at 40-90 ft, trolled with flashers out of the dam basin in July-August. The same smelt base feeds both programs: strong forage years lift everything. Fall stages salmon off Whitlock Bay's imitation-run net pens: South Dakota's most improbable limit.
