Largemouth bass illustration

Largemouth bass

Best: the spring pre-spawn and the fall feed

A warm-water sunfish of lakes, reservoirs, ponds and slow river backwaters that holds tight to cover: weeds, logs, rock ledges and docks. In Texas, TPWD surveys rank it "by far" the freshwater fish anglers most want to catch. The main feeding season after the spawn: work moving baits along weed edges, points and wood, and follow up with a soft plastic where a fish swirls.

Crappie illustration

Crappie

Best: the spring spawn; summer around docks, brush and the thermocline

Two slab-sided panfish, the white crappie and the black crappie, that gather around submerged timber, brush piles, docks and bridge pilings in lakes, reservoirs and slow river backwaters. Texas Parks and Wildlife counts crappie as the state's most popular panfish. Early in this band crappie are spawning in protected coves; afterward they move to docks, brush piles and standing timber near deeper water.

Catfish (blue, channel) illustration

Catfish (blue, channel)

Year-round, best at dusk and after dark

Three big catfish share most of the country's rivers and reservoirs: the channel catfish, the most widespread; the blue catfish, the largest; and the flathead, which hunts live fish. All feed mostly on or near the bottom. Spawning season from late May into summer: Iowa DNR suggests drifting bait under a float along riprap and snags where males guard nests in cavities.

White bass illustration

White bass

Best: the spring run up the tributaries, then summer surface schools

A silvery temperate bass of rivers and large reservoirs, also called sand bass, that schools in open water after shad and runs up tributaries to spawn in early spring. Summer and early fall schooling season over open water; follow the shad, and try live bait on the bottom at night.

About this water

A 4,009-acre Corps of Engineers reservoir on the San Gabriel River, Williamson County, Texas, impounded in 1980; the lake level shown here is the USGS gauge Granger Lake near Granger.

Fishing Granger Lake: the full guide

A shallow, turbid reservoir

TPWD describes Granger as a very shallow, turbid reservoir northeast of Austin, impounded in 1980 on the San Gabriel River near Granger and Taylor. It covers 4,009 acres at a conservation pool of 504 feet, reaches 50 feet at most and has no aquatic vegetation; flooded willows, stumps and laydowns make up the cover, with man-made fish habitat adding structure.

Crappie

Crappie are the most popular sport fish, and TPWD reports large numbers of legal-size fish. Spring is best and fall can be good: crappie move shallow in February and start spawning around 56 degrees, when they can be in a foot of water near flooded trees and laydowns. In summer TPWD points to main-lake humps, ridges and drop-offs with brush, most of it placed by anglers.

Catfish and white bass

Channel, flathead and blue catfish are present in good numbers throughout the reservoir, and bite around snags and laydowns in the river portion. White bass run up the San Gabriel River and the Willis Creek arm in spring when inflows allow, and chase shad in the main lake in summer and early fall. Largemouth bass are few, and TPWD rates their fishery marginal.

Zebra mussels

Zebra mussels have invaded Granger Lake. Draining water from boats and gear is required by Texas law, and possessing or moving zebra mussels is illegal.

Common questions

When is crappie fishing best at Granger?

TPWD says spring, with fall also good. Crappie move shallow in February and begin spawning near 56 degrees.

Are there special limits at Granger?

No. TPWD manages all species under statewide rules; crappie must be 10 inches, 25 a day.

Where can I launch?

At four Corps parks (Willis Creek, Taylor, Wilson H. Fox and Friendship), all with fees, or at the San Gabriel WMA's free canoe and jon-boat launch.
