Bank access is limited to these four parks; Running Branch Marina and Limestone Marina are private.

Off the beaten path

TPWD lists Lake Limestone at 12,553 acres and 43 feet deep on the Navasota River, 15 miles southeast of Groesbeck on FM 3371 in Leon, Robertson and Limestone counties. It was impounded in 1978 and is controlled by the Brazos River Authority. TPWD says it offers some of the best fishing of any central Texas lake and that, being off the beaten path, it sees little competition, particularly during the week.

Bass through the seasons

TPWD's tips: largemouth spawn between February and April, so fish the backs of the warmest creeks and protected main-lake coves with vegetation on the northern shoreline. From May through September, work main-lake points with vegetation or submerged timber, best where they border deep water; from October through December many bass move back into the creeks. TPWD stocked Lone Star largemouth bass fingerlings in 2025 and 2026.

Catfish, crappie and white bass

Blue, channel and flathead catfish are all present, channel catfish the most common; all three bite year-round but best in May and June, and trotlines work best in the upper lake. Crappie spawn in shallow coves and creek backs in spring and in summer gather 10 to 20 feet deep around large solitary trees at creek mouths and main-lake points. White bass run up the Navasota to spawn in early spring and school on windy main-lake points most of the year.
