A state park reservoir

Glendo Reservoir covers 12,500 acres on the North Platte River in southeastern Wyoming, a state park lake with sandy beaches, cottonwood shorelines and enough recreational infrastructure to fill on summer weekends. Beneath that, it is one of Wyoming’s better walleye fisheries, backed by rainbow and brown trout, yellow perch, catfish and a strong crappie population in wet years.

Walleye on the flats

Walleye are the primary target: spring finds them near the inflow and along rocky shorelines, taking jigs and minnows. Summer moves them onto the sand and gravel flats at 12-25 feet, where trolling crawler harnesses and bottom bouncers is the standard approach. The Muddy Bay and Sandy Beach areas hold fish consistently, and evening bites are reliably better than midday.

Trout and perch

Rainbow and brown trout are stocked and cruise the shoreline drop-offs, taking trolled spoons and stickbaits in spring and fall. Yellow perch school over the flats in numbers, providing steady action and anchoring the winter ice fishery. Catfish work the shallower flats through summer, and crappie appear in good numbers when water levels flood shoreline cover.

Glendo State Park manages numerous ramps, campgrounds and beach areas, and it is genuinely popular: summer weekends bring crowds of boaters and campers. Anglers do best on weekdays, early mornings and in the shoulder seasons. Water levels drop through the irrigation season.
