The Big G

Guntersville is the largest lake in Alabama: a 75-mile-long run of the Tennessee River between Nickajack and Guntersville dams. Its fame rests on two things: sprawling grass (hydrilla and milfoil flats that hold giants) and river ledges swept by current whenever TVA generates. The combination made it a Bassmaster Classic venue and a permanent top-10 lake in every national ranking.

Grass or ledges: pick your game

Spring and fall belong to the grass: lipless cranks ripped through young hydrilla in March, frogs and swim jigs over matted flats from summer into October. Hot summer days move the better schools onto the river ledges at 10-20 ft where current positions them: big crankbaits, swimbaits and 10-inch worms when the generators run. If the current stops, fish the grass edges and wait.

Beyond the green fish

The causeways (B.B. Comer, Highway 431) hold crappie in numbers, catfishing below Guntersville Dam is superb when generating, and winter drawdown stacks bass in the creek channels where a slow-rolled spinnerbait still gets bit. It is a river in a lake costume: when TVA generates, current positions bass predictably on ledges and grass points and turns the bite on. Generation schedules are published daily: plan around them like tides.

When do the grass mats get good?

Frogging over matted hydrilla peaks July through October. Before that, ripping lipless baits through emerging grass (March-April) is the classic big-bag pattern.

Is Guntersville still a top-10 bass lake?

Yes: it cycles with grass acreage, but tournament weights and five-fish bags over 25 lb keep it in every national conversation, and it remains the benchmark grass lake of the TVA chain.
