Alabama's Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division calls Wheeler the state's second-largest reservoir. It stretches 60 miles from Guntersville Dam to Wheeler Dam near Rogersville; the upper end runs like a river past Huntsville and begins to spread out near Decatur, the middle section has stump flats, weed beds and creek channels, and the lower end has many steep banks and long points.

Bass

Bass fishing is the lake's most popular fishery. Largemouth are the main species; smallmouth are common from Decatur west, especially from the Elk River down, and northern spotted bass hold mostly near the main channel.
