The short giant

Wilson is the Tennessee River's odd pool: only 15 miles long but the chain's deepest: 100-foot channels between Wheeler dam above and Wilson dam's famous tailwater below. The compressed geography concentrates everything: current, bait, and a smallmouth fishery that discreetly rivals its record-holding neighbor Pickwick.

The dam tailraces bookend the smallmouth program: heavy fish holding the seams whenever turbines spin (jerkbaits and hair jigs in winter, swimbaits year-round), and the bluff-lined channel between holds suspended schools the electronics crowd hunts with damiki rigs.
