Ouachita is the rare big lake with zero private shoreline: 40,000 acres inside national forest, 200 islands, and water clear enough to sight-fish. It holds Arkansas' flagship striper fishery, a sleeper population of big walleye, spotted and largemouth bass on brush and points, and summer schools that erupt across open water at dawn.

Working the clear water

Stripers follow shad over the river channel: live bait downlined at first light near Crystal Springs and the islands. Bass fishing is finesse-forward: drop shots and shaky heads on 15-30 ft brush. Walleye stack on main-lake points in early spring on the spawning run up the Ouachita River: few target them, and the ones who do keep quiet about it.

Common questions

Why fish Ouachita at night?

Clarity: daylight pushes summer fish deep and wary; lights concentrate the food chain within reach. Cooler, calmer, and often triple the catch.

Are there really no houses on the shoreline?

None: all 690 miles stay public forest. Camp on any island: the closest thing to wilderness big-water in the mid-South.
