The Allyn at Halton
Halton is the small upper-valley locality on the Allyn River north of Gresford, where the river runs clear and rocky out of the Barrington Tops forest toward the Paterson, with camping areas along the river road. The Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Halton supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page. The Paterson River at Gostwyck and Lostock Dam have their own pages.
Species and seasons
Australian bass are the fish of the Allyn, holding in the pools below the rocky runs and under the overhanging trees, taken on small lures and flies from spring to autumn. The New South Wales river closure for bass, 1 May to 31 August, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The camping areas and crossings along the Allyn River road give access to the pools, and the river is walked and waded between them.
Planning a visit
Halton is north of Gresford and Paterson, which have supplies, and the Allyn River camping areas are popular in summer. Bring light bass gear and wading shoes.
The river through the year
The Allyn rises in the rainforest of the Barrington Tops and comes down through Halton clear and cool, a small river of rocky runs and pools that rises fast after rain on the Tops and falls back quickly. The bass in it move downstream in winter, through the Paterson and the Hunter to the brackish water, to spawn, which is why New South Wales closes them from 1 May to 31 August; they come back in spring and feed through summer and autumn in the pools and under the trees. Summer weekends bring campers and swimmers to the river road, so weekdays and early mornings are quieter for fishing.
