The Barrington at Bobs Crossing
Bobs Crossing is a crossing on the Barrington River below the Barrington Tops, west of Gloucester, where the river comes down from the plateau clear and cold over boulders through forest and small farms toward the Manning. Species and seasons
Australian bass are the fish of the lower Barrington, taken on small lures and flies in the pools from spring to autumn; the colder upper river toward the Tops also holds trout. The New South Wales river closure for bass, 1 May to 31 August, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The crossing and the camping areas along the Barrington give access to the river, and anglers walk and wade the boulder runs between the pools.
Planning a visit
Gloucester is the nearest town with supplies, and the Barrington valley has camping and cabins. Bring light gear, wading shoes and warm clothes for the cold mornings.
The river through the year
The Barrington falls from the plateau of the Tops, where winters are cold and snow is not unknown, so the river at Bobs Crossing is clear and cool for much of the year, and heavy rain on the plateau sends quick, strong rises down the valley. The bass live in the lower river and travel down to the Manning estuary to spawn in winter, the reason for the New South Wales closure from 1 May to 31 August; they return in spring. The colder water upstream toward the Tops holds trout. Summer evenings are the best time for bass on the pools here.
