The Endeavour at Flaggy
The Endeavour River meets the sea at Cooktown, where James Cook beached the Endeavour in 1770, and runs back through mangroves and savanna into the ranges; Flaggy is a gauging site on the river upstream of the town. The Bureau of Meteorology’s Flaggy gauges have not reported recent readings to Water Data Online, so this page carries no level chart. Cooktown has its own page.
Species and seasons
Barramundi are the fish of the Endeavour, in the tidal reaches and the fresh water above; mangrove jack, grunter and trevally hold in the tidal snags and the mangroves near the town. The east coast barramundi closed season, 1 November to 31 January, applies to the river; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The Cooktown wharf and the boat ramp give access to the lower river, and the upper river is reached from the tracks west of the town. Estuarine crocodiles live in the Endeavour: keep well back from the water. The mangrove drains and the rock bars of the tidal river near Cooktown hold barramundi and jacks on the run-out tide, and the snags upstream are fished from a boat as the water clears after the wet.

Cooktown, at the mouth of the Endeavour, has supplies, accommodation, the wharf and the boat ramp, and the James Cook Museum tells the river’s history. Bring barramundi and jack lures, fish the tidal river from a boat, and time the trip for the dry season, when the roads to the Cape are open.
