The Norman at Glenore Weir
Glenore Weir holds the Norman River upstream of Normanton in the Gulf country of north-west Queensland, the town’s water supply and the upper limit of the tide, in savanna and melaleuca country. Below Normanton the river winds through salt flats and mangroves to Karumba and the Gulf. The Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Glenore Weir supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page. Species and seasons
Barramundi are the fish of the Norman, in the weir pool and the tidal river below; grunter, catfish and threadfin salmon are also caught in the lower river. The Gulf of Carpentaria barramundi closed season, 7 October to 31 January, applies here, not the east coast one; the species card computes it with the rule linked.
Where to fish it
The weir and the river reserves near Normanton give bank access to the Norman, and the tidal reaches below are fished from boats launched at Normanton and Karumba. Estuarine crocodiles are common in the Norman: keep well back from the water and never clean fish at the edge.

Normanton is the Gulf town on the Norman River, reached by the Burke Developmental Road and the Gulf Developmental Road, with supplies, accommodation and the ramp; Karumba, at the mouth, is the Gulf’s fishing town. Bring barramundi gear, plan around the Gulf closure from October to January, and check the roads, which close in the wet.
