The Gregory at Gregory
The Gregory River runs clear and fast all year through the dry Gulf country of north-west Queensland, fed by springs, lined with paperbarks and pandanus, past the roadhouse settlement of Gregory, also known as Gregory Downs, on the road between Burketown and the Mount Isa country. The Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Gregory supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Sooty grunter are the everyday fish of the Gregory, in the runs and below the rapids on small lures and flies; barramundi hold in the deeper pools; freshwater crocodiles live in the river and are protected. The Gulf of Carpentaria barramundi closed season, 7 October to 31 January, applies to the Gregory’s fresh water; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The crossing and the camping area at Gregory give access to the river, and the runs up and downstream are waded and fished in the dry season, when the Gulf roads are open. The river is popular with canoeists, who run the rapids below the crossing. The runs below the crossing and the pools under the paperbarks are the sooty grunter water, and the deeper, slower pools downstream hold the barramundi.

Gregory is a roadhouse and camping ground on the road between Burketown and the Mount Isa country, reached in the dry season; the roads close in the wet. Carry fuel, food and water, bring light lures for sooty grunter and barramundi gear for the pools, and respect the freshwater crocodiles, which are protected.
