Fishing Teemburra Dam: the full guide
The lake
Teemburra Dam sits on Teemburra Creek in the Pinnacle valley west of Mackay, a timbered impoundment under the Eungella range that supplies the Pioneer Valley irrigators, with a picnic area, a ramp and a shore that drops into drowned forest across most of the lake. It is a barramundi and sooty grunter water stocked by the Mackay group, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at the dam supplies the level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Barramundi are the fishery, in the drowned timber, along the points and over the weed at dawn, dusk and at night through the warm months, and Teemburra is on the Queensland Government’s exempt list, so the closure does not apply and the species card shows open all year with the rule linked; sooty grunter are numerous on the rocky points and the creek mouths, red claw are a pot fishery, and the stocking group publishes its releases.
Where to fish it
The ramp and the picnic area at the dam launch onto a lake that is timber almost everywhere, so the fishing is a boat fishery of casting to trees: the standing forest up the creek arms, the rocky points near the wall and the weed in the shallow bays. Bank fishing is limited to the picnic area, and the timber makes navigation a daylight skill before a night session.
Reading the report
The water temperature estimate, labelled as one, gives the barramundi band from September to April and the sooty grunter feed through it; the chart shows the irrigation draw-down that exposes the timber and the wet-season refill.
