The lake
Eungella Dam holds the Broken River on the plateau behind the Eungella range west of Mackay, a cool, high impoundment among cattle country and rainforest edges, reached by the road up the range past Eungella village, with a camping ground, a ramp and long, open shores. It is the coolest of the Mackay-district dams and its fishery leans to sooty grunter as much as barramundi; the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at the dam supplies the level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Sooty grunter are the everyday fish, on the rocky points, the timber and the creek mouths through the warm months on lures and bait; barramundi are stocked and fish the same structure at dawn and dusk when the water is warm enough, and Eungella is on the Queensland Government’s exempt list, so the closure does not apply and the species card shows open all year; red claw are a pot fishery and the stocking group publishes its releases. The altitude makes winter slow.
Where to fish it
The camping ground and the ramp at the dam are the access, and the rocky points along the shores and the timber in the arms upstream are the grunter and barramundi water; the open lake trolls well along the drop-offs. Bank fishing from the camp foreshore works at dusk, and the lake is fishable from the shore more than the timbered lowland dams.
Reading the report
