The reach
The Leven runs off the Black Bluff and the Loongana plateau through the Leven Canyon and a forested valley to the sea at Ulverstone, clear and rocky with pools between rapids in the upper river and gravel runs through the farmland below, with Bannons Bridge, the road crossings and the reserves along the Leven valley. It is wild trout water of the north-west, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Bannons Bridge supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page. The river below Whisky Creek is open all year under the IFS list; this reach follows the season.
Species and seasons
Brown trout are wild and are the fishery, in the runs and the pools on the fly, lures and bait; sea-run trout push up from the estuary in spring; and the reach follows the brown trout season the Inland Fisheries Service publishes, first Saturday of August to the Sunday nearest 30 April, computed on the species card. The tidal river at Ulverstone gives bream and the estuary fish under the indigenous fish waters rules.
Where to fish it
Bannons Bridge and the crossings give bank access to the middle river, the Leven Canyon reserve gives the gorge on foot, and the river is a wader’s water in the runs and the pool heads; the lower river toward Ulverstone fishes for sea-runners in spring. The canyon is for the fit.
