Yellowfin bream on the east coast, black bream in the southern estuaries. Structure fish: rock walls, jetty piles, oyster racks, snags and pontoons. Anglesea and the river
Anglesea is the Surf Coast town between Torquay and Lorne on the Anglesea River, which runs through the town to a mouth that opens and closes at the beach, with the main beach and Point Roadknight’s rocks and reef to the south, the cliffs of the Great Ocean Road either side and the heathland of the national park behind. It is a river-and-beach town, and the report on this page is scored for the town’s coordinates. Torquay has its own page.
Species and seasons
Black bream fish the river’s snags, the bridge and the edges all year and are the town’s fish; Australian salmon run the beach and Point Roadknight in the cooler months; King George whiting and flathead fish the sand off the point in summer for the boats; squid work the reef weed; estuary perch and mullet fish the river; and gummy shark fish the sand at night. The river’s mouth opens to the sea when it fills and the fishing changes with it.
Where to fish it
The Anglesea River from the main street bridge up past the caravan park is the bream water, fished from the banks and the small jetties, and the mouth at the beach is the salmon and whiting spot when it is open; Point Roadknight’s platforms and the reef off the point are the salmon rocks and the whiting ground for the boats launched at the point. The main beach takes the salmon in the cooler months.
