The Barwon at Pollocksford
Pollocksford is the crossing on the Barwon River on the western edge of Geelong, between Inverleigh and the city, where the river runs through a basalt valley of willows and paddocks. Species and seasons
Brown trout, redfin and river blackfish are the fish of this reach of the Barwon, with trout in the cooler months and redfin through the year. Victoria’s river trout closure, the Tuesday after the King’s Birthday weekend to the Friday before the first Saturday in September, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The crossing at Pollocksford and the public land along the river give bank access; much of the valley is private.

Geelong is minutes away, with tackle and supplies. It suits an evening session for redfin and a spring morning for trout.
The river through the year
The Barwon at Pollocksford carries the water of the Otway Ranges and the plains west of Geelong, and it runs highest in winter and spring, when the Otway rain comes through, and lowest in late summer. The trout here are cool-water fish, feeding best in autumn and spring, and the river trout closure takes them out of the winter. Redfin are active through the warm months in the slow pools, and river blackfish feed in the snags after dark. After heavy rain the river rises and colours quickly; the chart shows it. Below Pollocksford the Barwon runs on through Geelong to the estuary at Barwon Heads.
