Bemm River and Sydenham Inlet
Bemm River is the small village on Sydenham Inlet in far East Gippsland between Marlo and Mallacoota, with the Bemm River winding through forest into the inlet, the inlet’s shallow flats and its entrance to the sea at Pearl Point, the jetties and the caravan park, and the Croajingolong forest all around. It is a bream village, and the report on this page is scored for the village’s coordinates. Mallacoota has its own page.
Species and seasons
Black bream fish the river snags, the inlet edges and the jetties all year and are the reason the village exists as a fishing place; dusky flathead lie on the inlet flats from spring to autumn; estuary perch fish the river’s deep bends in the dark; luderick fish the jetties in winter; mullet fill the inlet; Australian salmon and tailor come in through the entrance when it is open; and the beach at Pearl Point gives salmon in the cooler months. The entrance opens and closes and the inlet’s salt changes with it.

The Bemm River from the village up through the forest is the bream water, fished from small boats on the snags and the deep bends, and the inlet’s edges and jetties in front of the caravan park are the bream and flathead marks; the entrance at Pearl Point is the salmon and tailor spot when it is open.
