The Cann River
Cann River is the small highway town in far East Gippsland where the Princes Highway crosses the river of the same name, which runs from the forested ranges past the town and down through Croajingolong National Park to Tamboon Inlet on the coast. The Bureau of Meteorology’s Cann River gauges have not reported recent readings to Water Data Online, so this page carries no level chart. Mallacoota has its own page.
Species and seasons
Australian bass are the sport fish of the Cann River’s fresh water, taken on surface lures and spinnerbaits under the overhanging banks; estuary perch and bream fish the lower river toward Tamboon Inlet. The VFA sets the size and bag limits for bass and estuary perch, linked in the sources, and this page computes no season it has not read; the species card is scored for bass and bream.
Where to fish it
The highway bridge and the reserves at the town give access to the river, and a kayak or a canoe is the way to fish the forest reaches downstream toward the inlet. Tamboon Inlet is reached through the national park. The pools below the highway bridge and the snags downstream through the forest are the bass water, fished with small surface lures and spinnerbaits on warm evenings.
